The 31st of January 2020 was an iconic day. After nearly 4 years, at 11pm, Britain officially withdrew from the European Union. We are an independent and sovereign nation. I know many of you have been waiting with bated breath for this moment, perhaps feeling as if it would never happen. But we have Got Brexit Done. In the lead up to this momentous event it has been an extremely busy time and there has been a hive of activity, not only to make sure Brexit happens but also getting on with day to day business, making sure that issues that mattered to local constituents was dealt with. We can now move forward with trade negotiations, our immigration system, our national agenda, and I for one have never been more excited for these opportunities. Democracy has been respected, as have the people of Broxtowe.
I hope that those of you who wished to take part in Brexit celebrations enjoyed themselves despite Brexit being delivered nearly four years after the referendum. I was delighted to have celebrated this momentous occasion in the Equalized Working Men’s Club, Stapleford, with Ray Singleton who built it up. In the past, I had visited the Miners Return in Kimberley to be introduced to the great work that the lovely ladies there are doing to support Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust with charity calendars. So earlier in the evening of 31st January, part of my Brexit day celebrations was to go back to the wonderful micropub with their charity calendar having been signed by the Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
