Ukrainian Refugees

The reports and scenes in and around Ukraine are incredibly distressing. I support the current sanctions the Government has made against Russia, and I will strongly support any further action the Government deems necessary.

It is vital that we respond with the upmost strength to what is an unprovoked attack. I believe that it is everyone’s duty to uphold democracy having served to this effect myself during my tour in Iraq for the Royal Air Force.

The people of Ukraine have the right to go about their lives without fear. The United Kingdom will work with its allies to ensure that Ukraine can revert to a state of peace. Over the past few months, the UK has provided Ukraine with over 3,615 new light anti-tank weapons (NLAWs) along with a range of other defensive weapons and non-lethal aid such as body armour. We will also shortly start delivering anti-tank Javelin missiles and we are exploring the possibility of donating Starstreak high-velocity, man-portable anti-air missiles. It is encouraging that Volodymyr Groysman, the ex-Prime Minister of Ukraine, has said that Ukraine can “feel the support and we are very grateful for the support”.

I want to be absolutely clear, the Government needs to do more to assist Ukrainian people reaching the UK. We need to ensure that there are not unnecessary barriers preventing Ukrainians from finding safety. In unprecedented times we must take unprecedented measures whilst ensuring that the security of the British public is not compromised.

In addition to sanctions, humanitarian aid, vital medical supplies and military support, the UK Government has changed the immigration system to support British nationals and their families who usually live in Ukraine, as well as Ukrainians living in the UK and their families. The Ukraine Family Scheme allows applicants to join family members or extend their stay in the UK. Successful applicants will be able to live, work and study in the UK and access public funds. This will last up to three years, does not include any salary or language requirements and is free to apply for. Ukrainians with a passport can now apply for a UK visa entirely online, with no need to visit Visa Application Centres.

The Government have announced the new sponsorship scheme ‘Homes for Ukraine’. This scheme allows sponsors such as communities, private sponsors or local authorities to bring those who are forced to flee Ukraine to the UK without any need for family ties to the UK. There will be no limit to this scheme and Ukrainian residents and nationals will be able to work in the UK for up to three years with full and unrestricted access to benefits, healthcare schools and local authority support . The compassionate sponsors will have to provide accommodation for a minimum of six months and the Government will provide a monthly payment of £350 per family which will be tax free and will not effect benefit entitlements or council tax status. If you are interested in being a sponsor you can do so on: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/homes-for-ukraine-scheme-launches. This scheme will be expanded as time goes on.

I have been truly touched by the outpouring of offers of support and assistance that have come from my constituents in Broxtowe to the people of Ukraine. Offers of clothing, medicines, money and the offer of shelter. It has been a true testament to the generosity and kindness of those within Broxtowe.  The Nottingham Ukrainian Cultural Centre is currently accepting offers of accommodation and work, therefore, if you would like to help please visit: https://www.nottinghamukrainianculturalcentre.co.uk/.

The helpline number for family members of British nationals in Ukraine is: +44 300 3032785. It is important to note that the situation is developing quickly, and so the Government must evolve its plans to adapt. I will be monitoring this situation very closely and as I have said above, I will support whatever action the Government deems necessary.

My thoughts are with the people in Ukraine.
